Darkness and Candy

On movies, television, videogames, darkness and a pictorial obsession.

Rodrigo Cifuentes Ruiz (Zapopan, Jalisco 1980) is a mexican artist currently living and working in the city of Santiago de Querétaro, México.

Various adjectives could begin to outline an idea of who is Rodrigo Cifuentes, but the one that draws closer and interests us most is that of being a completely obsessive being. A man who delights in listening to heavy metal music, and sit in front of the t.v. set for days immersed in videogames; which could be taken as a common place, nevertheless, another great obsession lurks in Rodrigo’s life; to paint. Being the obsessive being that he is, not just about his paintings, but about the perfection in them, his particular visión, where ancient techniques blend and mingle with current technological tools to create sarcastically festive and scary environments.

His work offers us a journey through his particular way of seeing, feeling, exploring and exploiting painting’s processes, technical resources and its infinite posibilities of meaning. It is through these that he shows us his obssessions, his guilty likes, his sense of humor and his perversions. He creates a liaison between 19th century easthetic values and elements from his everyday life, creating in turn a game of dirscursive distensions that could be easily interpreted as simple jokes but which in consequence delve into themselves.

Cifuentes’s work can be easily recognised, as his influences evidence themselves in it, just as his obsessions with necrotic tenebrism, baroque altarpieces, horror films, videogames and many other visual elements generated presently in pop culture. Thus, the central part of Rodrigo’s work is the obsession with which he addresses his obsessions. A process with a brave and tantric persistence, a pictorical obsession. This way it is possible to get close to its forms and swirl around them.

Imagine being immersed in a macabre world, walking blindly through a place where a dim llight barely lights up the objects, where a nauseating humid smell blends sweetness with putrefaction. You start to relate the images with feelings and sensations you perceive and you end up realizing you are at a candy stand in an abandoned cinema theatre. The sordid moment transforms sweet images into a sinister laughter; you are inside a scene form a cinematographic thriller, or maybe inside a sequence from a terrifying videogame.

Cifuentes’s pictoric work in “Darkness and Candy” reminds of that experience; a haunted house that scares, that surprises , that delights, that provoques through subtle and obsessive brush-strokes which verge on paranoid irony. Maniacal painting, obsessive and wild.

“Tinieblas y Confites”

De Rodrigo Cifuentes.

Del cine, la televisión, los videojuegos, la obscuridad y el obseso pictórico.

Rodrigo Cifuentes Ruiz (Zapopan Jalisco 1980) es un artista mexicano que actualmente vive y trabaja en la ciudad de Santiago de Querétaro, México.

Habría varios calificativos que podrían empezar a dibujar una idea de quién es Rodrigo Cifuentes, pero la que más se puede acercar y nos puede interesa es la de ser un ser completamente obsesivo. Un hombre al que le gusta escuchar heavy metal y estar frente al televisor jugando videojuegos por días; tal vez eso es un lugar común, aunque también hay otra gran obsesión en la vida de Rodrigo; la pintura. Y como ser obsesionado que es, no sólo la pintura, sino la perfección en ella, su particular visión; donde las técnicas antiguas se mezclan e integran con herramientas tecnológicas actuales para crear ambientes tétricos y sarcásticamente festivos.

Su obra nos ofrece un trayecto a través de su particular forma de ver, sentir, explorar y explotar la pintura; su proceso, sus recursos técnicos y sus posibilidades de significación. A través de ello nos muestra sus obsesiones, sus gustos banales, su sentido del humor y sus perversiones. De manera lúdica tiende un vínculo entre valores estéticos decimonónicos y elementos de su propia cotidianidad. Creando con esto un juego de distensiones discursivas que se pueden leer superficialmente como simples bromas pero que en consecuencia profundizan sobre sí mismas.

En general la pintura de Cifuentes se puede reconocer claramente; en ella se reconocen y son evidentes sus influencias. También de la misma manera son evidentes sus obsesiones; del tenebrismo necrótico, del retablo barroco, del cine de terror, de los videojuegos y demás elementos visuales generados en la cultura popular en la actualidad. Así la parte neural de la obra de Rodrigo es precisamente la obsesión con la que aborda sus obsesiones. Un proceso que tiene una persistencia tenaz tántrica, un obseso pictórico. De esta manera se puede tener un acercamiento a sus formas y discurrir en ellas.

Imagine usted estar inmerso en un mundo macabro, caminar a tientas en un lugar donde la poca luz sólo roza sutilmente los objetos, hay un olor nauseabundo húmedo que mezcla putrefacción y dulzura. Vas atando cabos de aquellas imágenes y sensaciones que logras percibir y terminas dándote cuenta que estás en una dulcería de algún cine abandonado. Lo sórdido del momento transforma imágenes dulces en carcajadas siniestras; estás en una escena de thriller cinematográfico o tal vez inmerso en la secuencia de algún videojuego aterrorizante.

El trabajo pictórico de Cifuentes en Tinieblas y confites remite a esa experiencia; una casona del terror que asusta, sorprende, deleita y provoca a través de pinceladas sutiles y obsesivas que rayan en una ironía paranoica. Pintura maniática, obsesiva y preciosista.
